The City Council have told me I have to have a traffic sign on the front wall freshly painted. Can I object?
Is there a law I can use?
Street names and numbering is a legal function. The powers of local authorities are contained in sections 64 and 65, Improvement Act of Municipalities clauses 1847, and Sections 17, 18 and 19 of the Public Health Act 1925. The Public Health Act 1925, S 19 gives authorities power to insist that every street name is displayed in a conspicuous place and also alter or renew it if it becomes illegible. This section makes it unlawful to shoot down a street name that has been legally established, or post a notice or advertisement in the vicinity of the signal. Reasonable compensation must be paid if the name of the street is painted on the wall, but apart from that, there is little you can do, unless you can identify a viable alternative.
